Shotcrete

Event Summary

Shotcrete, or sprayed concrete, is not just grey, roughly finished, unappealing concrete, it is actually very diverse and has very many different applications. From embankment retainment on the sides of roads, to backyard swimming pools, structural support for increased safety in underground tunnels and mines, through to full architectural finishes. This seminar will discuss some of those very diverse applications, and demonstrate what it is capable of. You’ll see some of the amazing finishes that you probably had no idea were created with shotcrete, as well as some fantastic structural achievements, and get a better understanding of what is involved in designing shotcrete.

Don't miss out, register today for the technical seminar.

Presenters

Pillow Talk Anchored-Shotcrete Permanent Retaining Wall
Dave Markham, Managing Director – Retaining Technologies Group
The presentation will provide an overview of the design installation of a permanent steep faced, anchored-shotcrete retaining wall up to 6m in height. The presentation will include a reflection on the detailing and lessons learnt during the project implementation.

Shotcrete an overview - versatility and finishes
Brian Garry - Rix Group
Brian’s presentation will discuss the specifications and guides available for Shotcrete. He will also talk about the versatility of shotcrete, along with it’s limitations, some of the issues encountered in the past and present, and what has been done and still needs to be done. And he will highlight the types of finishes that can be achieved with shotcrete, the Bad, the Ugly, the Good, and the Beautiful.

Shotcrete Mix Design
Dr Jurij Karlovsek - University of Queensland
The AuSS (Australian Shotcrete Society) recommends a mix design for shotcrete that is optimized for strength, workability and durability. This mix design involves selecting the appropriate cement, aggregates and admixtures, as well as determining the water-to-cement ratio and air content. The aim is to achieve a high-quality shotcrete that meets the project's performance requirements and specifications. By following the AuSS mix design guidelines, shotcrete contractors can improve the quality and efficiency of their work, resulting in long-lasting and safe structures.

Shotcrete application in wide-span tunnels
Dr David Oliveira, Technical Director Tunnelling - Aurecon
The need to future-proof current infrastructure projects has led to the design of some very wide-span tunnels. Spans over 20m are now relatively common in several road tunnels in Sydney, and Y-junction caverns have reached spans of up to 34m. David will present examples of how the use of shotcrete has allowed for the safe excavation and permanent support of these road tunnels, including discussions on aspects of structural design and the evolution of shotcrete mixes in recent projects.
